Understanding Veneers

With advances in dentistry, you no longer have to settle for stained, chipped or misshapen teeth. Many people choose to improve their smiles with veneers. A veneer is a thin covering placed over the visible part of the tooth. Veneers are specially made to make your teeth look natural. Placing veneers requires just a few appointments.

There are two types of veneers, porcelain, or ceramic, veneers and composite resin veneers.

Here’s a quick overview:

  • Ceramic veneers are extremely thin shells made of a strong porcelain or ceramic. When needed, our experienced dentist removes a small amount of enamel from the front and sides of your tooth. This makes room for the veneer and prevents your restored tooth from feeling or looking bulky or unnatural. Impressions are taken and sent to a dental lab that makes the veneers to fit your individual teeth. After completion, the veneers are bonded to your teeth.
  • Composite resin veneers generally are done in one appointment. After your tooth is prepared and reshaped, the dentist carefully bonds and sculpts the composite material in a color that matches your other teeth. A special light is used to harden the composite. The veneer is smoothed and polished to look like a natural tooth.
